William Stephen Salocks Obituary

William Stephen Salocks
Resident of Los Altos
William Stephen Salocks Born May 8, 1921, New Milford, CT. Passed away April 3, 2016, Mountain View, CA, from a series of heart attacks, at the age of 94.
Son of Andrew and Ann Salocks and beloved husband of Mary Milsap Salocks.
After graduating from New Milford (Connecticut) High School in 1939, he drove across the country to Southern California, where he attended technical schools and worked in the aircraft manufacturing industry. During World War II, he became a U.S. Navy flying instructor, and, after the end of the war, he remained in the Naval Reserves for 20 years, attaining the rank of Lieutenant Commander. While still serving in the Navy, he married Mary M. Gunn of Paris, Texas, in 1946. At the service, a Navy chaplain presided at the candlelight ceremony, where one of the musical selections was Debussy's "Clair de lune".
As a result of the GI Bill, Salocks was able to attend the University of Southern California, where he graduated in 1952, with a degree in business, but one of the classes he remembered most was a Shakespeare class for English majors taught by professor Frank Baxter. During the 50's and 60's, Salocks worked in the aerospace and electronics industries, but, in the 70's, he changed careers, got his master's degree and teaching credential, and became a college instructor and supervisor in the Cooperative Education programs at Skyline College in San Bruno, San Jose City College, and other community colleges in the San Francisco Bay Area.
For over a decade, he did heroic service in caring for his wife, Mary, during her long bout with dementia and Alzheimer's disease.
He is survived by his sons and their wives, Chris and Madeline, and Chuck and Susan, as well as his three grandchildren, Karl, Kai and Janamarie. A memorial will be held at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Los Altos at 10:30 on April 23. -
